Doctor Who- The simplest way I can summarize this show is there is a time traveling british alien who finds interesting humans to take along on his trip to see the universe. The alien calls himself The Doctor, he is the last of a race called the Time Lords and to escape a tortured past he travels in his time machine called the Tardis. The time machine in this show allows it take you to a new world every show ranging from the fiery tragedy of Pompeii to the 5 billion where the Earth is swallowed by the sun. The only thing better than the setting are the characters The Doctor is over 900 years old and over that time has accumulated more than his fair share of skeletons in his closet. He is a deep character that tries to push his past aside by acting care free and silly but the humans he takes on his travels each teach him more and more about himself and others causing him to constantly evolve. In the end it is always interesting and keeps you glued to the screen till you're begging for more.
30 Rock- This is the enormously popular NBC sitcom about a team of people working on an NBC sitcom. The jokes they make in this show always crack me up because of their silliness and often completely random nature, but there is an undercurrent of parody to the whole thing. They often make fun of things NBC is actually doing and several NBC stars make cameos from news anchors to talk show host like Conan O'Brian. The show is written, produced, created by, and stars Tina Fey a brilliant comedian who plays a NBC comedy writer trying to make her program "The Girlie Show" work while dealing with her crazy actors and overbearing boss. The show is nonstop laughs and has no signs of stopping.
Firefly- This Sci-fi cult hit is often regarded as one of best written and under appreciated shows to hit the air waves. It is about a cast of 9 crew members living in a beaten up and run down space ship just trying to survive. The show is best described as Western in space. The story goes that when we moved from earth we found a solar system with dozens of planets and the inner planets close to the sun became technologically advanced while the outer ones are little more than desert with a few towns where the fastest mode of transport is a horse or your own two legs. The crew we follow float somewhere between these two worlds and they have a motto, "If you have a job we'll take it. Don't much care what it is." They'll steal your house right out from underneath you if they're getting paid for it, but they would also help you defend it if you asked. The crew consists of basically a bunch of misfits forced together out of desperation, from the doctor, who rich family disowns him to the war vet who fought on the losing side and just wants to have everyone stay together. They form a tight family that know each other well and trust one another but each ahs their own secret to tell. unfortunately most of these secerets will never be told because after the first season the show was canceled but the show lives on in it's fans that will never let their show die.
